What we transcribe — Reels vs Posts vs Stories vs IGTV

Instagram isn’t one thing. The four content types behave differently and understanding which is which saves the “why doesn’t this work?” frustration:

Content typeWorks?Why
ReelsUsuallyMost likely to have captions. Creators often upload them; Instagram sometimes auto-generates.
Feed video postsSometimesLess caption coverage than Reels. Older feed videos often have none.
Stories (live)SometimesIf the Story is still within 24hr and has captions, yes. If expired, the URL 404s.
Story HighlightsSometimesSame rules as Stories but URLs persist. Success depends on whether Instagram kept the caption track.
IGTV (legacy)Try the current URLIGTV was deprecated in April 2022. Most old instagram.com/tv/ URLs redirect to Reels or feed — use the redirected URL.
Photo posts / carouselsNoNo audio, no transcript. This tool is speech-only.
Instagram Live archivesNot currentlyDifferent endpoint; not part of this tool yet.

Rough overall hit rate on random public Reels: 60–75% succeed. The rest fail because Instagram doesn’t have a caption track for that specific video. That’s not our tool being flaky — it’s Instagram’s coverage.

URL formats that work

Every real Instagram URL format is accepted:

FormatContent type
instagram.com/reel/ABC…Reels
instagram.com/p/DEF…Feed post (video or photo)
instagram.com/tv/GHI…Legacy IGTV (may redirect)
instagram.com/stories/username/12345Stories (live only)
instagram.com/s/HIGHLIGHT_IDHighlight
instagr.am/…Mobile share (all types)

Copy from wherever you found the video — the Instagram app’s Share button, browser address bar, or a DM link. All resolve to the same underlying content.

When it won’t work

Being upfront about the failure modes so you don’t waste a paste:

  • Private accounts.100% failure. No external tool bypasses Instagram’s privacy settings. If you’re the account owner, either make the account public temporarily or download your own content and upload to our full app.
  • Expired Stories.Stories disappear 24 hours after posting unless saved as a Highlight. If a Story URL 404s, it’s already gone. There’s no recovery.
  • Videos with only music (no speech). Nothing to transcribe.
  • Photo posts and carousels. No audio track exists.
  • Instagram Live archives. Different endpoint; not supported in this tool. Download the archive and upload to our full app.
  • Region-locked content. Rare, but if Instagram serves the video only to certain countries, our upstream may not fetch it.
  • Videos where Instagram never generated captions. This is the honest big one — Instagram’s coverage is patchier than TikTok’s, so the “no captions available” error is more common on Instagram.

The workaround for any of these: download the video (many free tools do this for public content) and upload the file to our full video-to-text app. AI transcription runs on the audio directly, so it doesn’t need Instagram to have generated a caption track.

Accuracy on Instagram specifically

Instagram audio quality varies more than TikTok because creators use a wider range of recording setups (some studios, some phone-in-hand). Realistic ranges:

  • Reels with creator-uploaded captions: 90–95%. Usually verbatim of what the creator wrote or auto-generated then edited.
  • Reels with Instagram auto-generated captions: 88–93%. Comparable to TikTok’s auto-caption quality.
  • Reels with music underneath the voice: 80–90%. Music tracks can bleed into the caption model.
  • Quick-cut editing style(common in educational Reels): 85–92%. Segmentation is imperfect at cut points.
  • Non-English: highly variable, depends on whether Instagram supports auto-captions for that language.

For deeper accuracy breakdowns across audio conditions, see How Accurate Is Whisper. We don’t cite the “99.9% accuracy” claim common to competitor tools because we can’t source it to a published Instagram benchmark.

Rate limit and when to sign up

Free for one transcript per 24 hours per IP address. On the second attempt, we ask you to sign up. Sign-up is free (60 minutes of full-app credit, no credit card) and unlocks:

  • Unlimited paste-URL transcripts (no daily cap)
  • Batch upload for bulk Reels
  • Speaker labels and word-level timestamps
  • Export as .srt, .vtt, .docx, PDF, JSON
  • Full 99-language AI transcription — works even when Instagram has no caption track for the video

What to do with the transcript

  • Repurpose your own Reels into carousel posts, blog articles, newsletters, tweets, LinkedIn posts — the creator workflow is the highest-value use.
  • Study competitor hooks— grab the first 3–5 seconds of transcripts from top-performing Reels in your niche.
  • Feed to an LLM for hook analysis, tone matching, or draft variations.
  • Accessibility— read Reels silently when you can’t play audio.
  • Research / journalism — cite the transcript and link to the Reel.

How this page was verified

Instagram URL format coverage was checked against every observed share-sheet variant (Reel, feed post, Story, Highlight, legacy IGTV, mobile instagr.am shortlink). The “no captions available” failure mode was confirmed by testing 30 random public Reels through our upstream provider (Supadata): 22 returned captions, 8 returned no captions — a 73% hit rate matching the 60–75% range cited above. Accuracy ranges come from spot-checking 15 Reels against creator-uploaded captions where available. IGTV deprecation was verified against Instagram’s April 2022 announcement merging video features. Story 24-hour expiry is documented in Instagram Help. We don’t cite the “99.9%” and “99% in 50+ languages” claims common to competitor tools because we can’t source either to a published benchmark on Instagram content. The 1-per-day rate limit is enforced server-side and documented here as configured in production.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I transcribe any Instagram Reel or Post?

Public Reels and feed video posts with captions available: yes. Private accounts: no — no external tool can bypass Instagram's privacy settings. Expired Stories: no — Stories vanish after 24 hours. Photo posts: no audio to transcribe. Videos with only background music and no speech: nothing to transcribe. Rough hit rate for random public Reels: 60-75% succeed, the rest fail because Instagram doesn't have a caption track for that specific video.

Why does Instagram sometimes not have captions?

Instagram's caption coverage is patchier than TikTok's. Instagram relies heavily on creator-uploaded captions (a creator can toggle 'auto-generate captions' or paste their own) rather than auto-captioning every video like TikTok does. If the creator didn't enable captions and Instagram didn't auto-generate any, no tool can produce a transcript from Instagram's side. Workaround: download the video and upload to our full app for AI transcription that runs on the audio directly.

Does this work with Instagram Stories?

Only if the Story is still live. Stories disappear 24 hours after posting (unless saved as a Highlight, which has a different URL). If a Story URL 404s, it's likely already expired. Highlights work if their URL is still accessible.

Can I transcribe a private Instagram account's Reels?

No. Instagram's privacy model means only accounts that follow the private account can even view its content. No external transcript tool can bypass that — including ours, competitors like Saveto or WayinVideo, or a paste-URL browser extension. If you're the account owner and want to transcribe your own Reels, you can (1) make the account public temporarily, or (2) download your own Reels from Instagram and upload to our full app.

What Instagram URL formats work?

Reels (instagram.com/reel/…), feed video posts (instagram.com/p/…), legacy IGTV (instagram.com/tv/… — most redirect to Reels or feed now), and Stories (instagram.com/stories/username/12345 — only if live). Both www and non-www work, mobile share URLs (instagr.am/…) work. Any URL that opens the video in a browser should be accepted.

Are Instagram Reel transcripts accurate?

For Reels with creator-uploaded captions, 90-95% — the captions are usually verbatim of what the creator wrote or auto-generated then edited. For Reels with Instagram auto-generated captions, 88-93% — comparable to TikTok. Accuracy drops on Reels with heavy background music, quick voiceover cuts, non-English languages, or accented speech. Ignore any tool claiming 99.9% accuracy — nobody has published a benchmark for that number on Instagram specifically.

Can I download the transcript as a file?

Yes. After the transcript loads, click Copy transcript for plain text, or Download .txt for a file. Sign up for a free DeluxeScribe account and you also get .srt, .vtt, .docx, PDF, and JSON export with word-level timestamps.

Is there a rate limit?

One free transcript per 24 hours per IP address, no sign-up required. On the second attempt, we ask you to sign up. Sign-up is free (60 minutes of full-app credit, no credit card) and lifts the rate limit. This lets us keep the free tool actually free but sustainable.
